I was saying last week on the podcast, sometimes the site can be compartmentalised. With the forum/main site/podcast etc all living apart from each other.

So you may or may not have noticed, we've started a review section up again. Some great writers have been putting their work up and it's had a really good start.

Now I want to grab the kettle whilst the iron's hot (if that's the right saying, if not that's why I'm not writing reviews).
I'm going to start writing to publishers and trying to get some review copies sent for the writers..

I have a list of contacts on Gamepress of which I'm a member. But the list is massive.
Just to give you an example, here all the A's.

So can people please help me by shouting out some publishers names they think we should be writing to?
I can spend a day with this next week, so a large list is no problem. I can write one nice letter and send a 100+ out easily. Probably best starting with the indies, but given how well the site is doing, no harm in trying some of the big boys as well.

Also.......

Should I be asking specific games? Or just asking to get on their 'list' and send games out when they happen (which doesn't sound like it would work).

Any help, tips, ideas or experience would be great.

I've heard Ubisoft are tough to crack, indies love attention so you'll probably get a 100% success rate there, Deep Silver worth a go as they've a couple of big games launching soon including Sacred 3 and of course lots of Saints Row stuff now that they have the license.

In general go for the big guns first (Square Enix, Eidos, EA, Take 2/Rockstar, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) then work downwards from there, if you don't ask you don't get. You WILL get knockbacks but don't take it to heart, at least you might get some idea of how many followers you need or how much more web presence you need to get their attention again later on.

Uglygeezer,

My Mrs has had a few review copies of games in the past for the kids (Rayman Origins, The current Pac-man, Harry Potter), they are mostly given to her by PR companies.

I can get some details for PR to contact as it might be easier to get games via them than from Publishers.

Let me know if you are interested and I will get her to give me some details

Generally speaking, from when i did it in the past, they all go through PR agencies, and it is them that organise the games and like. The best thing to do with gamespress is contact the publisher. They will more often than not get you in touch with the right people and take it from there.

After that it is best to ask for anything to start with. Build a reputation, and eventually they will start sending the bigger titles when asked, and inviting folks to events. It took a while to get stuff set up with our site and this was a good few years ago. So forgive me if anything i have said is wrong, but that is what we did

Send me a quick PM if you like matey, I've got a fairly exhaustive list of contacts by now from running TGR.

Some folks use PR companies and some don't, it's a minefield that I've somehow found my way through over the past four years!

Check some of the press releases for games on gamespress, a lot have contact details specifically for their pr companies or UK representatives for their company.

Ubisoft don't even consider you unless your site has a really high visitor count on Alexa, which frugal was nowhere near when I tried a couple of years ago.
Remember Telltale Games being especially great.

Check the release schedules and try and target some upcoming titles (AAA ones may be a bit ambitious when starting out). Search out their contact details on gamespress and ask them nicely.

I did have a bunch of useful stuff on my frugal Gmail and Google Drive, will see if I can dig it out.

One thing I'll say straight up: don't bother trying Capcom until you have 250,000 unique visitors each month. They're the only company I've not managed to tap into...

And Benjo is right, Telltale are fab but don't deal with their own stuff any more...

Seriously though, I had help from a couple of people when I started up and always vowed to do the same when the time came, so feel free to message me an i'll do what I can :)

I have contacts with many publishers and devs that I can tap if needs be? Drop me an email and let me know who you want an in with and I'll make things happen...

And yeah, don't bother with Capcom. Iain's right. 250,000 uniques + or "go away, puny website".

Another one to add to the list is zen studios. The guys that make the pinball tables. I found a email on their site and pinged over a email asking about review content to be given castlestorm plus a few of the tables. Its not much but its a start :)

That would be fantastic.

Our traffic is on the up (massively), but will stick with the ones we feel we can get somewhere with for now.
