So, I've not been on my PS3 for a while, but I've left it plugged in and it's being doing the nightly connection to PSN to do PL+ stuff and updates. Now it's got itself borked, stuck trying to apply the latest firmware update.

If you switch it on, it says it's going to do an update, progress bar rolls along for a but, then it gets stuck and says it can't update. Reboot, the whole thing repeats, it's stuck in a loop.

Error is 8002F149.

I've tried replacing the HD with a blank one, and showing it the firmware update downloaded from Sony onto a USB stick, it formats the blank HDD, then tries to update the firmware, but repeats the problem.

Any ideas?

Yep, that's exactly what happened to my PS3 before it gave up the ghost.

I used to download the updates manually and do it via safe mode.

I fucked my discs once as well and found myself in a loops, if that's happened, still follow the safe mode route and swap discs in and out until you get out of it.

It's a bit of a pain, but mine still lasted almost a year after this happened (it's really common as well).

What's the safe mode route?

So, the long story so far.

In a nutshell, this is fine running 4.55, and I can get it back to that no problem. As soon as it tries to install 4.60, whatever way you try, it gets stuck in a loop it can't get out of.

I called up Sony, waited ~ 30 minutes to get to speak to someone, and once I did they were great, very helpful, they passed me on to a proper techie, who rang me, gave me various things to try, but sadly none were to any avail.

So, having exhausted all their suggestion, it came to:

Quote:
I can see from your e-mail that, following your recent contact with PlayStation Support, you need to arrange for your PlayStation 3 to be replaced. As you may know, we do offer a replacement service for consoles that are beyond the twelve month warranty which is provided with each new PlayStation 3.

We operate this exchange service rather than a repair, and can replace a machine with a remanufactured console, usually within a week. Each of our remanufactured consoles have undergone a complete factory re-manufacturing process, with any worn or faulty parts replaced for new. Every machine then has its outer casing replaced before being subjected to the same high standard quality assurance processes that are used in our factories in Asia.

This service currently operates at a price of £110, which covers the cost of parts, labour, shipping and other general administrative costs associated with the remanufacturing process. Please note, that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe do not make any profit from this service, and in fact currently subsidise the cost to afford our customers the best price that we are able.

So, as I see it, Sony reached out to my happily working PS3, sent it the 4.60 update via PS+, and bricked my console. The only way forwards they are now offering is pay them £110.

One hope I have is that 4.65 will work, perhaps?

So, I'm left with a console that I can use off line fine, but not get anything new on to (PS+ again), a fine Blu-Ray player. But with out access to PSN, it's hobbled.

I cannot see how this isn't Sony's problem to fix. Yes it's out of warranty, but the issue is entirely inflicted by Sony. It was fine until Sony sent it some software, and now it isn't.

For £100 you may as well buy a new one and trade your old one in to make up the difference.

As its out of warranty I am not sure Sony are liable to fix it, the updates are technically optional, even though you have to have them to use it online, have you seen anyone else on line with a similar problem with this or older updates?

The fact they have to explain why it is so much means they know its not a good deal.

Where would you trade one in? Game?

It'd look odd trading one in to buy a new one.

It'd certainly pass any tests, works perfectly on 4.55.
