Have the feeling this is going to come back to bite me in the backside but here goes: my laptop is dying, been a faithful companion for coming on 6-7 years but its time is up. At most with my patience and the rate its deteriorating I would give it at least 2-3 months at best.

I'm looking for something that's capable as a sort of gaming/normal laptop so my limit would probably be £400ish (I think even that might not be enough and sacrifices may have to be made).

I'm not really a techy guy :-? so even if I look at one that's got 4gb ram and 500gb mem I'm unsure if that's good or bad

The only one that really caught my eye was this: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1458833.htm

Just watch out for ones that have integrated intel graphics, they'll be pretty useless for gaming. Ones with a dedicated graphics card and decent processor will generally run around £5-600.

You'll struggle to get a decent gaming capable one for under £400, but something like this should be a respectable starting point:

http://m.ebuyer.com/584159
Asus X550CC Laptop
- Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8GHz
- 8GB RAM + 1TB HDD
- NVIDIA GT 720M 2GB DDR3
- Webcam + 15.6" LED
- Windows 8 64bit
£469.98

Is it the hardware or just the Windows install? Reinstalling windows can make a big difference.

Definitely the hardware as its quite an old and basic laptop

Not sure I can afford that one as I'm paying for half with my mum.

I thought I found a simple cheaper alternative X550CA but it seems I've gotten myself more confused than before with this one

I checked to see if some of the games I got would run through http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri and its got me a bit worried

What sort of games are you expecting to run?

There's often minor variants on the same model numbers with laptops, so processor, graphics, memory and hard drive may all be different. The Argos one has a weaker Celeron processor and both have integrated graphics (and the laptop will have to share some of that 6GB memory with the onboard graphics).

I got quite a range of games from one's that don't take much to play like Binding of Isaac and the complex games like Portal 2 and Bioshock Infinite.

I'm sticking to consoles when it comes to the big games (unless I spot them on a bargain and can't resist  ) games so I'm likely to play the indies I got.

Here's a list of my games (on my laptop I could only play Isaac and The Impossible Game so ignore the other playtimes  ): http://steamcommunity.com/id/walcalr01/games/?tab=all

The Intel 4000 should run some Source engine games ok like CS Go and L4D2, but don't be surprised if a lot of games fail to play or run very slowly at an extremely low resolution. There's a small selection of games that seem to work 'well' with the Intel Graphics (one of the Dirt games springs to mind).

Most indie stuff would probably be OK though

Ok I found one that's got an amd radeon hd card (all I see are words and numbers  ) would this be the better choice (my heart and wallet says yes but my mind is just lost at this point)?

Not sure about the spec on that one, says it's dedicated graphics but doesn't say what it is exactly or how much dedicated memory it has. The AMD A8 processors are APUs, which means they come with a graphics chip and CPU in one, and they don't have dedicated memory for graphics. Apparently the A8 comes with a Radeon HD 7640G graphics chip which isn't that great and the laptop only has 4GB memory to play with too. It will be marginally better than the Intel HD 4000 ones for gaming, but other factors like memory and CPU might slow it down a bit.

When you're spending as little as £299 on a laptop there'll always be compromises. Whether it's hard drive, processor, screen resolution, graphics card, memory; something's gotta give!

Just buy a tablet instead :-)
