OK.....

We're going out on a bit of a limb with the next episode.... We're doing a Mental Illness Special :-D

Hopefully it will still be as twattish as always, but we will speak and be frank with our own experiences with (for myself, depression and anxiety) mental illness and gaming.

This thread could be dead as soon as I hit the POST button :-D

But!

anything you might want us to discuss?

Any observations about mental health and gaming?

Any experiences of you own, or friends?

I'm also in the depression anxiety camp. A hangover from my physical illness a couple of years ago. Gaming, and I say this seriously, saved my life when I was at my very lowest point. Specifically skyrim, which I still use as an outlet for dealing with either low mood or heightened anxiety. Like many others, I'm now lumbered with periods of uncontrollable and dangerously low moods. Obviously medication and keeping active helps, but finding and planning the right video game that works for you is also a terrific treatment.

Playing Skyrim would send me in to very dark depression!

Mental health issues are far more wide spread than people realise

I'm a long term sufferer of depression, and am also laid up with what might be CFS/ME (still undiagnosed and undergoing tests). I find that when I'm feeling really down gaming is a great opportunity to disappear into another world where your problems can't come with you. If its a game you're good at then you get to feel like you're the one on top for a change, on the flip side it does mean that I can be less patient and tolerant when a game gets fiddly or repetitive but its still a great way to escape for a few hours. I don't have much money these days so I have to think carefully before buying a new game because I have got all day to play it and it must be one I like. That's why I'm excited about GTAV. It's a totally new world where I can do what I want without any of my normal physical pains or depression.

Just after I had been diagnosed with CFS/ME I spent a lot of time gaming. Not so much as a depression thing but it was more to delay me from having to attempt the journey back up the stairs to my bed. I wouldn't class myself as ever being depressed but maybe playing games helps with that because when I am having a shit time and I want to just escape from my problems then I can chuck a game and just escape from it all for a few hours

I suffer from mild autism and a bit of depression (not helped when most of my friends are complete arseholes). Video games have pretty much helped me cope with the world as I feel without it I probably would have been in a psych ward or anger clinic.

I prefer games that act as an outlet that helps to relieve stress like Saints Row, GTA and even surprisingly WWE (a good hardcore match and I'm sorted).

Certain games like Battlefield 3 and COD leave me in a dark mood especially if I'm just losing or being sniped constantly and my teammates are just jerking about and doing nothing. Even recently with the glitch I encounted on BF3 with having to re-download all the packs it just puts me right down.

I have been recently diagnosed with severe depression/anxiety not helping much with something wrong with my stomach and bowels :-?
so far I have lost nearly 5 stone in about 12 weeks
for me gaming is a release from the general shit I am dealing with day to day, helped a lot by talking to people while playing about any random shit
I am still trying to get friend on the ps3 now though as I have had enough with ms and their backwards bullshit ways
agreed to what has been said before though, mental illness is still a taboo subject yet loads of people have it in one form or another

Whilst I've never been diagnosed with anything mental, I think we all have down days and I know there's days where it just feels like everything gets on top of you. Thankfully, for me, the feeling doesn't last long.

That said, when I feel like that it's good to game, it's escapism and it's nice to disappear off to another world for a bit. I have to pick and choose my games though, if I'm in that sort of mood it's generally a single player game I want to play or something multiplayer where I don't have to talk to people - a racing game or something

I get a bit of game rage if my K/D ratio goes under 1.
