I remember with the advent of the XBox 360 and the PS3 that we first heard the acronym 'DLC' and we were rightfully concerned.

Clothes for your horse in The Elder Scrolls, and ability to buy in game currency in Tales of Vesperia, costume packs for your fighters that add up to way more than the actual game in Street Fighter.

What were once treats for playing a game well and unlocked, were now being used by publishers as a way to get gamers dig deeper into their pockets.

But, despite the scummery, DLC was rather welcomed. Even the guys that had the gall to sell us horse clothes were able to give us bigger extended stories through quality DLC and as much dross as there was and is, there was good quality DLC that extended the lives of our favourite games.

Now we're a generation on, the new dirt word is micro-transactions.

Evolve being a good example of this new disease, released last week with 80+ pieces of DLC valued at around the £100 mark

I want Evolve, but I can't see past the appalling business model, knowing that if this game is a success it could become the norm.

This is the first time I've boycotted a game I want.......

Any thoughts?

What's your limit? Every boycotted a game before?

After the beta, I didn't really want it, but this sort of freemium, iPad game type, milking the customer stuff always puts me off.

Nail in the coffin.

I have also boycotted the game which is a shame as I love l4d.
I also don't buy fifa every year only odd years as it's to buggy.

And never ever ever buy pre order on anything. it's killing gaming.

Ever never ever. :)

I can't say I've ever boycotted a game that I wanted because I didn't agree with its add-on model. But I definitely wouldn't buy any of the add-ons unless they were on sale, or I had a voucher or something. This mostly applies to COD because I can't stand the people that play online.

I do remember the days when DLC were promises of extended gameplay and not just "Look, now you can look like a stupid fuck with a purple gun!" Burnout Paradise adding bikes, Fallout 3 adding the Alien Spacecraft, even Guitar Hero adding songs. These aided the longevity of the games, and even brought people back into them. These are great examples of how it should be done, not with rubbish skin changing add-ons that not only show you have money to waste, but also show how much of a prick you are.

I miss the days of.. buy the game.. get the full game, maybe a year later get an expansion that was thought up after with suggestions from players or ideas that were realised after release..

The entire idea of, we made a game, but let's hold back extras and charge more is a bloody disgrace.

I got talked into buying season passes with some games, and after 2/3 weeks got burned out on the game and never touched the dlc.. that I had already paid for..

just make a game, and sell it.. no more dlc.. no more skins, horse armor, outfits...

bring back the good old days

I only ever go near DLC if it Adds to the story of the game.

The last truly great DLC/expansion I bought was the InFAMOUS First Light which they went on to give away to Plus subscribers. I don't even mind that I spent money on it because it was actually worth the money I did pay. It even had its own Platinum trophy!
