Well my PS3 has just died with a YLOD on me. It's had a kicking over the years, it was never the same since I upgraded the HDD to 320GB. I lost count of the number of times that I stripped the thing down to pull coins & lolly sticks out of the disc slot (damn kids!). I don't know what to do with it so thought I'd put it to the vote (but after seeing the results from yesterdays voting I think that might not be such a good idea).

If I can be bothered then I might pull the thing apart to see if I can fix it. I'm gaming a hell of a lot less these days & can't play online anymore so part of me just wants to cut my losses, sell my 25 (or so) games, 3 controllers, keyboard, headset, camera, Move & Navigator controllers & Play TV. Part of me think that I might as well buy another one. I feel slightly aggrieved about that though.

It ate my Red Dead Redemption GOTY that I only received yesterday as a last meal too! |_()

As a owner of a 'non fixable' Phatty i would say try to get it fixed then back up your original drive (to transfer to any replacement in the future). I'm still hoping my original (best) will get a fix sometime in the future as the slim is cheap and nasty in comparison......

Dont give up on it yet and good luck :ugeek:

Thanks. I've been looking at heat guns (I'm assuming I need to reflow the solder), & might give it a try when I get some spare time. It's been a loooong time since I backed up & if I've lost everything then I'm tempted to turn my back on the platform.

:-( That sucks mate.

I'd try and get it fixed if it was me. Had a couple of squeky-bum moments with mine refusing to eject discs so it's only a matter of time before mine goes for good. Glad I've got PS Plus to backup my saves.

Heat guns will probably fry your motherboard so please avoid using them
Professional reballers exist so i'd leave it to them if you can afford it.

PS plus is a good idea for keeping your game saves (i still haven't bothered as now i don't give a **** for sony) but you need a working PS3 so i hope you have better luck than me and get the chance to get it working 8-)

Thanks, I've just found a place in Newcastle that has a no fix no fee repair service & will charge £30 for a YLOD fix. They promise to do it within hours too. I don't suppose I have anything to lose.

So, do I pull my HDD before I take it in or not?

I was going to use the excuse to sell all my PS3 stuff to fund a HP Proliant Microserver too.

£30 and a few hours will get you a "reflow" which may last a while, a full-on fix so I've read would be a "reball" which should be more or less permanent. If it is a reball they're offering, grab it.

I've done a few reflows myself on the PS3 I bought off eBay, but they were very short lived.

Thanks. It was an advert on Gumtree (a site I'd never used before) & didn't give much in the way of detail. I might have to have a hunt around then.

Well I've decided to hold off with the repair & bought the HP ProLiant Microserver anyway. I've got plans to do constructive things with my spare time for a change.

We'll see how long it lasts.
